Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
